Many people are afraid of meditation. Why? I don’t know. Probably because of some false information.

Here are 7 Myths about Meditation.

1. Meditation is Concentration

Totally untrue. If anything, it is the opposite. With meditation, your mind becomes much more relaxed. You strive to let go of all concerns which results in a state of deep rest. If anything, concentration is a benefit of meditation.

2. Meditation Is For Old People

Lies! Meditation is practiced universally by the young and the old. It adds value to lives of people of all age groups. Dalai Lamas are discovered at a very young age and begin training soon after.

3. Meditation Is Like Hypnotizing Yourself

Cmon! Meditation is the opposite of hypnosis. When a person is under hypnosis they have no clue what they are going through. On the other hand, a person who is meditating has heightened awareness.

4. Sit In The Lotus Posture To Meditate

False. There are many types of meditation. Some say to sit crossed-legged, but the golden rule is that it is more important to be comfortable and steady. How can you have a deep experience if you are uncomfortable? You can use whatever form you want. You can sit cross-legged, sit in a chair, or even lay on a sofa.

5. Meditation Is A Way Of Running Away From Problems

Not so. Meditation forces you to look at your problems and face them head on. With meditation you build the skills to handle any situation by accepting them as they are. You learn to take conscious action instead of brooding over the past or worrying about the future.

6. Meditation, A Religious Practice

What!? Meditation was around way before any religion. If anything, meditation transcends religion and is capable of bringing harmony amongst the different religions, nations and faiths altogether.

7. Meditation Is Thought Control

Really? Thoughts cannot be controlled. They come and go as they please. In meditation, you do not long for good thoughts and try to avoid bad ones. You simply witness as they float in and out of your mind. Eventually, you learn to transcend thoughts and move into a deep inner space of silence.
