10 Simple Ways To Get Happy Now

get happy now

“Happiness is not something ready made. It comes from your own actions.”~Dalai Lama

Some days I wake up full of enthusiasm and ready to take on the world.  Happiness is not a problem on those days.  Then, on other days, I’m dragging ass!  And happiness is a little more elusive.  Have you been there?  Are you there now?  Want to know how to get happy now?

Sometimes the simplest things can improve your happiness.

Here Are 10 Simple Ways To Get Happy Now

1.   Simply Smile

This is so simple, yet so powerful.  Once you put a smile on your face it becomes contagious.  Usually, when people see someone else smiling they reciprocate and it spreads exponentially.  Besides that, there are numerous studies that have shown that the physical act of smiling fires off chemicals in the brain that creates happiness.  A smile on your face will help you to get happy now.

2.   Belt It Out

There’s no doubt we all feel good when one of our favorite tunes plays on the radio.  Well, if you sing along you can experience some positive effects.  Studies have shown that singing can cause a significant decrease in both anxiety and depression.  This is because the act of singing releases the brain’s “feel good” chemicals.  There are physical benefits as well.  It has been studied that having to control the breath while singing has some of the same health benefits as exercise.

3.   Bust A Move

I’m sure everyone knows that dancing is a form of exercise.  However, did you know that dancing releases much more of those endorphins (“feel good” chemicals) in the brain than most other cardiovascular exercises?  When you are dancing it doesn’t even feel like exercise.  *Tip: Use dance as your cardio exercise.  When I weighed around 275 pounds I started dancing around in my living room to foster the habit of living an active life.  I eventually lost 100 pounds.  I was a much happier person because of this.

4.   Write

It’s being proven more and more that writing can improve your happiness.  Why?  Because it is a form of self discovery.  Therefore, consider starting a journal.  You can start by making a daily list of all the things you are grateful for.  This will take your focus off of other things that might be stealing your happiness away.  And, it will train your brain to look for the positive things in life.  When we are in an emotional state of pure gratitude, it’s impossible to feel negative emotions.

5.   Just Breathe

When we are stressed, fearful, or angry we tend to restrict our breathing.  To regain your happiness, a few simple deep breaths can center you once again.  To increase these benefits, consider taking up meditation.  There are many benefits from meditation, but you will definitely get happy now.

6.   Tidy Up

Sometimes your environment can be the cause of your stress and/or unhappiness.  I don’t know about you, but when my desk is a mess I cannot concentrate.  Having a cluttered and disorganized house can also make my thoughts seem cluttered and unorganized.  It’s as if I cannot find the thoughts I prefer to focus on.  Tidying up your surroundings could help your situation.  If not for nothing, it will take your mind off of whatever is bothering you.

7.   Eat Fish

Cold-water fish, such as tuna, mackerel and salmon contain omega-3 fatty acids.  Studies show that people who eat these types of fish three or more times a week show improvement in anxiety, insomnia, sadness, and suicidal thoughts.  If you are concerned about mercury levels in these fish sardines, oysters and flax seeds, are also good sources of omega-3 fatty acids.  Or, just take a supplement.

8.   Seek Motivation

When we are unhappy we tend to want to isolate ourselves.  That is the worst thing you can do.  Life is about relationships and the connection they bring.  Your family and friends can be the ones to change your mood.  But, you have to reach out to them and let them know you need them.  Don’t be too proud to admit you feel down.  You’d be surprised how many of your family and friend would come running to encourage you and spark your motivation again.

9.   Go Outdoors

Give yourself permission to be in awe.  For most people life has become task oriented.  They rush from one activity to the next and feel they do not have enough time in the day.  This is an unhealthy and stressful way to live.  Try to make time to go outdoors and experience the subtle, non-task-related wonders of life.  Walk the beach at sunset, have a picnic with your loved ones, or just frolic in your backyard.  You’d be amazed what this can do for you.  It reconnects you to your feelings.

10.   Laugh

Have you ever heard the saying “laughter is good medicine?”  According to Hunter Doherty Adams, this is the truth.  If you have no idea who this is, watch Patch Adams, staring Robin Williams.  To this day, Hunter Doherty Adams yearly organizes a group of volunteers from around the world to dress as clowns and travel to various countries where bring humor to orphans, patients, and other people needing to laugh again.
